I was at a restaurant and got in the conversation “Coke or Pepsi”, personally I’m a Pepsi guy (love Mountain Dew). I thought I would dig up some stats online and see which company does better connecting with their customers using social media.

Results are based on May 14th 2012 stats

Facebook:

Coca-Cola: 41,822,237 Likes 265,094 talking about this

Pepsi: 8,170,319 likes 41,217 talking about this

Twitter:

@CocaCola 54,754 Tweets 67,537 Following 537,722 Followers

@Pepsi 8,981 Tweets 44,769 Following 680,428 Followers

Google+:

Coca-Cola: 520,915 +1s

Pepsi: 516,259 +1s

I find the Twitter stats very odd. Somehow Pepsi is connecting with more followers than Coca-Cola and they have only tweeted 8,941 times compared to Coca-Cola with 54,000 tweets. When it comes to Facebook Coca-Cola is dominating that platform, they are the 17th most Liked Facebook page.

It would take a while to find this data, but it would be interesting to see the total ecosystem of Pepsi and Coca-Cola. For example: Mountain Dew has 6,967,333 likes · 40,233 talking about this stats on Facebook compared to Dr. Pepper 11,853,001 likes · 166,085 talking about this.

Both are connecting with their customers online but overall Coca-Cola has a bigger reach. I personally think Pepsi lacks the quality of social media. If I was part of the social media marketing on Pepsi I would come up with more viral campaigns.

After making this public, @chrisolds2009 brought up a good point:

@digijeff one thing to consider is that coke is a brand that is “collected” while Pepsi is not. Might make a little difference but not much

Excited to announce my new development I been working on for WWE. I built a custom built YouTube Facebook app so their fans can easily view WWE YouTube videos right on their Facebook page.

The development consists of custom playlist loading. WWE has several different shows they offer, the top banner is clickable to load a different playlist for the fans. I also built a pretty nice drop down where a fan can click another playlist on their WWE account and easily view them.

View the app live here: https://www.facebook.com/wwe/app_382172851800617

My YouTube app for any Facebook page admin to add to their page on AppBistro is pretty popular, click here to get it for your Facebook page. I also offer custom built Facebook apps, contact me.

The future of TVs will work just like your mobile phone, it will have apps. If you are in the search of buying a new TV, make sure it’s a Smart TV.

Instant Entertainment
Along with an Internet connection, almost all smart products can deliver a wide range of instant entertainment to your HDTV (through specialized apps). Stream movies, videos and music, access social networking sites, get the latest news, weather and financial data, or even study fantasy football information.

Web Browser
A select list of smart products provide a Web browser that allows you to directly access the Internet without the use of apps. Search for and type in content online using your HDTV, just as you do with your computer.

Multimedia Search
A select list of smart products can combine your TV channels, compatible DVR, apps, the Internet and your home network into one searchable experience (capabilities vary by device). For example, you can type in the name of a TV program, movie or subject, hit search, and quickly see the time and channel it’s on, plus any related video content that’s available on the Internet.

Sony – Google TV / 46″ Class / LED / 1080p / 60Hz / HDTV

Review: I am a former iPhone user turned all Android because of my usage of Google products. When Google TV was first announced I was lucky enough to have Google send me a free Google TV Logitech adapter. At first Google TV was boring and I didn’t use it, with their recent new redesign it has a lot of potential. Being a developer I am constantly thinking of new things to build, having a Smart TV now allows me to build a Android TV app. Let’s say you want the TV to turn on and show you the weather at a specific time, that can be built. What’s more amazing is, I downloaded the Google TV remote on my mobile phone so now I got the TV remote on my phone in case I can’t find the physical remote. The new Sony remote is awesome and a lot better than the Logitech keyboard that first came out, fits in the hand comfortably.

I love how Google Music is available on my TV and I can play music while I’m in the shower. I can’t wait until more and more apps are built for Android TVs. Lots of innovative ideas can be developed. To be able to watch videos on YouTube and other streaming services like Ustream is incredible. The quality of this TV is incredible, especially for the price, I love it.

Realtors posting on social media

Let’s take a real estate agent posting to their personal Facebook profile. I think everyone uses Facebook differently but don’t bombard your peers with obnoxious content. If you are getting little activity on your Facebook posts, there is probably a reason, your friends have lost interest in what you are posting. If you are posting nothing but new house listings, this gets obnoxious. If I’m your friend and have no desire to buy a home anytime soon, why would I care about new listings? The ironic thing about this post is, I post about technology a good amount and I’m sure a few Facebook friends have clicked the hide on my name because they have no interest in it.

My recommendations for real estate agents for posting content on social media, don’t always make it about listings and the real estate industry on your personal Facebook, this is annoying to your peers. You will soon be hidden. Don’t use Facebook to try and convert friends into buyers, it’s not everyday they are going to buy a new house anyways, besides they already know you are a real estate agent. Create a blog and post that stuff there, so when people are searching on Google they can find you (SEO).

Distribute your content over time and not all at once

The amount of times we share content is another big thing I noticed. I would rather subscribe / follow a friend that is posting less content than a friend that is posting more content. Nobody wants their stream filled with the same person. Spread the content out through the week. If you have 3 videos to post, don’t post them all in one day, spread them throughout the week. The quality of content is also questioned, don’t always post about YOU. Make a post where it’s an open question, this helps create interaction between you and your audience. If you just post amessage with one sentence that is simple and dry, how do you expect anyone to post any comments? They won’t. Drive the attention to the content in a creative way.

Posting photography on social media

If you are a photographer and post your pictures, but they are of one specific trend, this gets boring. This ends up leading to a hide click on Facebook. I don’t care to see the same things over and over again that I have already seen. When I connect with someone on Facebook, I want to have a personal connection with them. Balance is needed. A good example of photography would be to follow Trey Ratcliff. Trey is a good follow because he always posts new and exciting pictures that he takes along with a detailed caption about the shot. His pictures are always new and different which makes it interesting to follow.

Switch gears. If something is not working then change your direction. If your posts are not getting comments, likes, RTs, +1s then obviously you are not posting the right content.

Music artists stop posting about just your music, interact with your fans

Think of your favorite artist. Would it be more memorable to you if you saw them in concert or if you had a conversation with them?

A personal connection > music connection.

Let’s take a music artist for example. If they always post about their music career, what personal connection does a fan have with them? They don’t. A good example I have brought up Eminem before. I think if Eminem used social media more personal to connect with his fans he would be the king of all platforms. Eminem has a wild persona, and that’s what makes him so interesting. Instead his labels run his social media and every so often he will do something with his fans. But overall, Eminem is really boring when it comes to social media. Imagine if he was Facebooking, Tweeting when he was having problems with his ex wife or Mariah Carey, this would be so entertaining to follow. People love train wrecks and gossip or People magazine and TMZ would not be in business. He should let his Slim Shady loose on social media, it would sell. If Eminem let his audience in on his personal life it would increase his interest significantly. His posts would easily go viral. Having a label run a twitter account is equivalent to watching paint dry. As much as I enjoy Eminem as a music artist, I find his social media life boring.

I am always looking for new clients to work with about digital strategy, I have learned a lot over the years working with past clients and running my fan site network. Always look forward to more opportunities, contact me.

The term online community manager is what has been coined for what I do. I help entertainment brands such as music artists with digital strategy. It is more than just setting up a Facebook and Twitter account. There is so much involved with being a successful brand online, if you don’t do it the right way, you will fail.

For a music artist it is important to reach your entire fan base, right? If we could go back in time (to the late 90s to early 2000s) and an artist could grab each email address of their fans, imagine how valuable that would be now. The music industry is a struggle. How long will artists keep signing record deals? No one knows. But what I do know is the most important role for a music artist right now is an online community manager. If you are not building your brand properly with today’s technology then you will fail. If you are an entertainment brand (music artist, athlete, celebrity) and you are not making money from the digital side of things, you are doing it wrong. There is so much value in building your empire online. Blogging content is big. I ran a successful fan site network from 2003-2009 not because I got lucky, but because of my content. I kept my content fresh every day so users would keep coming back. Again, it’s more than just the content tho…but I don’t want to post everything I know on here, that would make me invaluable.

Today, I am excited as one of my clients who I have worked with since 2010 listened to me. I told hip hop artist Paul Wall that it’s important for him to join Google+ in July 2011 because no other music artists were jumping on board. Being obsessed with the technology side of things I know when something new comes out before the masses. All I know is Paul Wall listened to my advice of joining and using Google+ and he was fortunate to get on the suggested user list for being an active music artist. Now he broke the 1,000,000 milestone mark. Whether articles want to say Google+ is a ghost town or not, Paul Wall just gained 1,000,000 people to reach out to and that’s powerful. Time to monetize.

As the growth of mobile phone users are steadily increasing, it’s very important to make sure your website is mobile compatible. If you are the type that always wants to have the top of the line technology, it is very important right now, you start with mobile strategy.

How many times do you try looking at a website on your mobile phone and the website includes a lot of horizontal scrolling? Images are overlapping the layout making you scroll? This is not compatible for mobile users and obnoxious.

You should have a different style sheet for regular PC users and one for mobile (as well as one for tablets etc).

I have noticed a lot of people, before the mobile hype, started buying .mobi domains or they told users that their mobile website is http://m.domain.com. I recommend trying to avoid this as much as possible. If you are on your mobile device and tweet out a domain “http://m.domain.com/some-file.html” and a PC user clicks it, they will be seeing a not so friendly PC version of the website and vice versa. If you do decide to use a subdomain I recommend detecting the user is from a PC / mobile (via user agent) and redirecting them to the right url.

The last two years I have really made Facebook apps as my niche. I’ve been working with many people and building a good deal of apps over the last two years. I was fortunate to have my work shared via word of mouth, I appreciate all the referrals. This year my objective is to focus on mobile optimized websites as well as Facebook apps. Contact me if you are interested in hearing more and I can help you improve.

I like to use my blog to praise the sites and services that I feel are awesome and also throw the ones that aren’t under the bus.

Virgin gaming has been the worst situation I have dealt with in a while. They have TERRIBLE customer service.

I bought Madden 12 just like any other Madden junkie when it came out, played it non stop, drank a bunch of mountain dew, ate pizza and my girlfriend hated me for playing so much….you get the picture. I noticed this advertisement for “cash & prizes” and decided to read more about it. EA Sports and Virgin Gaming have a partnership where you can put money on your Virgin Gaming account and play online against other players for real money. This sounded intriguing, I deposited $20 into my account to start playing. Moments after I deposited money on my account, I noticed I could play a free tournament, if I win three games in a row I get $20. Of course, the Madden beast I am with the Denver Broncos, I won all three games and collected my $20.

After I won the money, I had $40 total in my account and decided to cash out. Makes perfect sense so far right? Yes I know it does, now here is where it gets stupid.

Today is 2/23/2012 and I have been dealing with this since 11/20/2011.

December 20th email from Virgin Gaming:

“Thanks for contacting us. On November 20, 2011, you received a $20 cashprize and to withdraw winnings from any free tournament on VirginGaming.com you must first play four cash games (in series tournaments or head-to-head matches) totalling a minimum of $20 or leave $20 in the account. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.”

In order for me to actually be able to cash the $20 out I won from the free tournament, I would need to play a total of 4 MORE games making the money really mine. That’s the catch they pull on you so users don’t play and cash out right away. Online casinos do this exact method with “free $150 casino chips”. It’s all just a gimmick to get you hooked. That part is fine, it’s whatever, I sent another request since I wasn’t able to make the $40 withdraw, for $20.

December 21st email from Virgin Gaming:

“Thanks for letting us know. As previously stated to withdraw this money, you will need to play four challenges with an entry fee of $5 or more. Thanks for letting us know. In order to refund your money back to your card, you will need to withdraw. Unfortunately the $3 charge is a Paypal fee and not a Virgin Gaming fee, so we will be unable to waive this charge.

Additionally, if you request a withdrawal for $20, which is the amount you deposited, then you will have no issues withdrawing. If you have any additional questions or concerns just let us know.”

Okay notice the part where it says “a withdrawal for $20, which is the amount you deposited, then you will have no issues withdrawing“. This is not even CLOSE to the truth, it’s been nothing but non stop problems! Of course I write them back, aggravated, explaining that my $20 withdraw request has been declined again!

You know those situations that come in life where others are thinking “dude it’s only $20, don’t worry about it”? This is that moment, but it’s about the principal of getting screwed over. They won’t even let me get back my money and also charging a $3 service fee on me! I can’t stand companies screwing over their own customers that are giving them money. What makes this matter worse is their idiotic customer service. Nothing is getting accomplished, nobody is taking my issue serious after 9+ emails. That’s not customer service, that’s bullshit.

After sending out this tweet:

Never use @VirginGaming.I deposited $20 to play Madden, then asked for refund b/c it was complicated, they refused to give money back, unreal

I got a response from @virgingaming on twitter:

@digijeff You should be able to withdraw. What happened? Would also like to know where things got complicated and help if I can. ^JE

This was a sigh of relief, like I might actually have someone trying to fix my issue. He tells me to follow @virgingaming so he can DM me his email and I can tell him what’s going on, which I did.

5 days later and NO REPLY. Before I was waiting on support tickets to get answered which one of my tickets never got a response to, so I responded to it again and after 7 days I get a reply. But to have a direct email to a customer service agent over there to help this issue and not even respond again is LUDICROUS!

Also, the main reason why I decided to cash out, was their system is beyond complicated. I could not even figure out how to play anyone for money, even for just $5. Virgin Gaming, this is not how you treat your customers, that is pathetic and ridiculous customer service, I hope this blog finds it way around the search engines to prevent people depositing anymore money to you.
